Art Experience for Kids
Coming to the Industrial Arts Center

Registration is open for the Creative Summer 2010 at the Industrial Arts Center in Gulfport's Art Village. Kicking off the six-week program will be a repeat of last year's popular Kids Art Experience with James Oleson Jr. June 14-18.

Kids will learn a variety of media and make two projects each day. They will be encouraged to explore how they can create unique works of art from materials and objects they can find in their everyday environment. Media will include wire sculpture, soap sculpture, rock sculpture, collage, mosaic, caricature and more. The Week long art experience will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday - Friday, June 14-18 and July 5-9.

Beginning on June 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday will be Hands On Sculpture. In this fun series, kids will explore a variety of hands on sculptural techniques including handbuilding with clay, papier mache, working with armatures, relief sculpture and glass casting. Hands On Sculpture will be held 2 to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 21-25 and July 12-15.

The third offering for summer 2010 will be Kids Glass Week. Kids will experience a variety of glass arts in a series of five 3-hour workshops: blown glass ornaments, hot glass paperweights, glass fusing, broken glass mosaic and glass painting. This week long glass art experience will be held from 9 a.m. to noon,  Monday - Friday, June 28 - July 2 and July 19-23.

Society will hold a fundraiser silent auction in conjunction
with the Gulfport Merchant’s Association at the Gulfport Casino.
Music by Tampa Bay Blues Band, Thunderbolt Brown and The Robbie
Robertson Band. Food catered by Stella’s Deli & Gelato, sponsored
by The House of Renee Originals. Event is free, everyone is invited.

Registrations for the 2010 Summer Program for Children will begin on Saturday, May 1st for Gulfport residents and non-residents currently enrolled in the School Year Child Care Program. Registrations for non-residents not enrolled in the School Year Child Care Program begin Monday, May 24th for 30 children max. The program is available to children who have completed Kindergarten thru age 14.   Hours of registration for Saturday are from 9:00 a.m.-Noon and hours for Monday–Friday are from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.  Registration fees are $15 for residents and $100 for non- residents. Summer camp program hours are from 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. (structured hours, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.) with extended hours available until 6 p.m. for an extra charge. Yoga in the Garden

The 49th Street South Business Association (So49) is proud to
co-sponsor “Yoga in the Garden,” along with BanyanScapes Nursery
and The Longhouse, Inc. For the next five Saturdays, through June
19, the community is invited to attend an outdoor yoga class to be
held in the lovely garden setting of BanyanScapes Nursery, 932 49
Street S. The class begins at 10:15 a.m. and lasts approximately one
hour. Please bring your own mat or towel. The class is suitable for all
levels of practice and is available on a donation basis.

Tai Chi in Gulfport

Tai Chi classes from the Gulfport Rec Center will be moving for the
summer to Scout Hall located at 5315 28 Avenue S. There will be a
Thursday morning class all summer starting June 10 at 9 a.m. This is
class in beginning Taoist tai chi and includes instruction of the entire tai
chi set. Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. All ages are welcome.

The No Slack Band to Perform at FREE Concert on the Point


The City of Gulfport and Gulfport Chamber of Commerce have announced local band No Slack will perform at the FREE Concert on the Point Friday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The free summer concert brings exciting live music to a beautiful outdoor waterfront venue overlooking Boca Ciega Bay on the lawn of the Gulfport Recreation Center, 5730 Shore Blvd. South.  Bring a lawn chair and dancing shoes for this action packed night of Motown and R&B.  Beer, wine, sodas, hot dogs and snacks will be available for a nominal charge.  Please no coolers or dogs.

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14.  

It commemorates the adoption of the flag, which happened

on that date by resolution of the Second Continental

Congress in 1777.



To keep the American tradition, the City of Gulfport,

along with the American Legion Post 125, will perform a

very special Flag Day ceremony as they retire old

American flags by proper ceremonial burn.  This event is

held Monday, June 14th at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park on the

corner of 54th St. S. and Shore Blvd. S. in Gulfport.  

This is event is open to the public and all are welcome.

Summer Solstice Drum Gathering

The Gulfport Labyrinth (located at 5001 20 Avenue S. (east of Gulfport Elementary) will be celebrating the Longest Day of the Year, Summer Solstice, on June 21 with a Drum Gathering and dancing celebration from 7-11 p.m. Bring a chair and your good vibrations (and bug spray and a beverage). Hands Across the Sand Returns to Gulfport

Gulfport Beach will be a participating location in an international demonstration to oppose oil drilling in our coastal waters. On Saturday, June 26th, people from all walks of life and political affiliations will gather at locations throughout the world. During the event, all participants throughout the will join hands at noon for 15 minutes, creating a metaphorical “line in the sand.”  Over 400 locations throughout the U.S. and nearly 200 locations in other countries will be participating in Hands Across the Sand on the same day.

This “show of hands” will be the second demonstration of its kind.  The first Hands Across the Sand event in February mobilized thousands of people in Florida to show opposition to oil drilling off of our coasts.  The recent Deep Horizon oil spill and its catastrophic effects have now magnified the issue many times over.  Wildlife and environment, fisheries, the quality of life for residents, and vital tourist industries are all drastically affected by this spill.  Future spills caused by drilling platform accidents, oil corporation malfeasance, oil transportation accidents and other mishaps can cause similar devastation.  Hands Across the Sand will also emphasize support for major investments in clean energy alternatives.

Participants for the Gulfport event will meet at the Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd, at 11 a.m. Participants will join hands at noon on the adjacent Gulfport Beach.  Speakers at the Gulfport event will include Gulfport Mayor Mike Yakes, Florida State Representatives Rick Kriseman and Janet Long, and Florida State Senator Dan Gelber.

Art Experience for Kids
Coming to the Industrial Arts Center

Registration is open for the Creative Summer 2010 at the Industrial Arts Center in Gulfport's Art Village. Kicking off the six-week program will be a repeat of last year's popular Kids Art Experience with James Oleson Jr. June 14-18.

Kids will learn a variety of media and make two projects each day. They will be encouraged to explore how they can create unique works of art from materials and objects they can find in their everyday environment. Media will include wire sculpture, soap sculpture, rock sculpture, collage, mosaic, caricature and more. The Week long art experience will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday - Friday, June 14-18 and July 5-9.

Beginning on June 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday will be Hands On Sculpture. In this fun series, kids will explore a variety of hands on sculptural techniques including handbuilding with clay, papier mache, working with armatures, relief sculpture and glass casting. Hands On Sculpture will be held 2 to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 21-25 and July 12-15.

The third offering for summer 2010 will be Kids Glass Week. Kids will experience a variety of glass arts in a series of five 3-hour workshops: blown glass ornaments, hot glass paperweights, glass fusing, broken glass mosaic and glass painting. This week long glass art experience will be held from 9 a.m. to noon,  Monday - Friday, June 28 - July 2 and July 19-23.
