Who doesn't love a wedding? The ''Mama'' character in a nationally acclaimed mystery series loves them so much, she's tying the sacred knot for a fifth time. What's a Bridezilla to do, though, when her caterer winds up dead even before the first pig-in-a-blanket is passed?
The Sea Breeze Manor Bed & Breakfast Inn in Gulfport will host a ''Mama Gets Hitched'' book signing and open house Sat., Aug. 28, from 2-3 p.m. Author Deborah Sharp, a former USA Today reporter, will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served. Tacky wedding wear is encouraged, but optional.
The book is the third in Sharp's funny, Florida-set series, compared by ''Kirkus Reviews'' to Janet Evanovich: ''Stephanie Plum goes into the backwoods in an amusingly wild ride . . .''
A former resident of the Tampa Bay area, Sharp has appeared on the Today Show. She chatted with Al Roker about the switch from journalism to mysteries, and her colorful Mama character. Mama may be a serial bride, but she sees no reason to scale back. Her daughters sport Scarlett O'Hara gowns, and her pet Pomeranian, in doggy vest and top hat, is the ring-bearer. It’s the Wedding of the Century, until a corpse at the VFW and a suspect list as long as the gift registry threaten to turn Mama’s special day especially deadly.
''Publishers Weekly'' says of MAMA GETS HITCHED (Midnight Ink, 2010, $14.95): ''Sibling rivalry, steamy romance, a surprising killer, and plenty of catfish and hush puppies make this Southern cozy a winner.''
The series debuted in 2008, with MAMA DOES TIME. In 2009, MAMA RIDES SHOTGUN was released. The author saddled up to research that book's setting on the week-long, cross-state Florida Cracker Trail ride. Sharp lives in her hometown of Fort Lauderdale with her husband, Kerry Sanders, a reporter for NBC News.
