Gulfport Gears up for Government Week
This year’s Florida City Government Week is October 17 - 23. This week recognizes the important role played by city governments in our lives. It is also a time to spread the word to all citizens of Florida that they are an important part of the government that is closest to the people. City Government Week is an ongoing effort sponsored by the Florida League of Cities to raise public awareness about the services that cities perform and to educate the public on how city government works. The City of Gulfport will celebrate Government week in a variety of ways to reach several different age groups of Citizens. During the Centennial Celebration on October 16, there will be a display tent of City of Gulfport Services. Gulfport Mayor, Mike Yakes will be visiting the Senior Center during lunch on Tuesday, October 19 to talk about city structure and functions. Gulfport Elementary (grades 3 – 5) has been invited to participate in a Government Week poster contest. All participants will have their posters displayed at City Hall and winners will be announced at the October 19 Regular Council Meeting at 7 p.m. Before the Council Meeting at 6 p.m., there will be a Mock Council Meeting performed by the Gulfport Teen Council. It will be televised live on local Gulfport Bright house channel 615 and rebroadcasted the following day at 10 a.m. It can also be viewed on the live web stream at http://www.mygulfport.us/GTV615/Live_ Webstream.htm. School City Hall tours will be scheduled that week and more details will be available when finalized.
