Gecko Fest Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The 10th Annual Gulfport Gecko Fest is set for Saturday, September 4 from 12 noon to 10 p.m. on Beach Blvd. This free event sponsored by the Gulfport Merchants Association, The City of Gulfport and TheGulfport Chamber of Commerce, St. Petersburg Times, Bright House Networks, GEICO, and Zhu-niverse and is a full day of fun for everyone. This whimsical send off to summer is like Mardi Gras meets theRenaissance, and brings together strolling street performers, main stage performers, performing artists and vendors with all types of weird and wonderful wares up and down Beach Blvd. Over 200 arts, craft and food vendors will be in attendance at this year’s event!
Zhu-universe will sponsor the children’s area with inflatable habitat trails, human hamster wheel, 6 set obstacle course, Nintendo DS Hand held systems, Wii kiosks, photo opportunities, Zhu Zhu Pets and Kung Zhu Product and accessories showcase, give-a-ways, ID clips, Music and more! Join the Goddess and the Gecko Court along with other roving characters who will be roaming the streets and entertaining the crowds! Live entertainment will be provided on two main stages from noon till 10 p.m. Don’t forget this is an audience participation event (especially the parade at 6 p.m.) with adults and children’s costume contests and a hat contest at the end. Additional activities include sidewalk chalk art, face painting, dance lessons and much more.
The day culminates in Gulfport’s famous street dance at 8 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes, and help celebrate their 10th anniversary!

Audition for “Murder in Green Meadows”
The Gulfport Community Players will be holding auditions for a thriller by Douglas Post entitled “Murder in Green Meadows” on September 6 and 7. Auditions begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Players’ Back Door Theater, located at 1619 49 Street S. in Gulfport. The play will be performed at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater of Gulfport from November 4 through 14. The director for this play will be Bill Rucker and he needs two men and two women, in their 30’s to 40’s for his cast. Auditions will be cold reading from the script.

Clothing Swap at Gulfport Fresh Market to Benefit CASA
Back by popular demand, a clothing swap will take place at the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market on Tuesday, September 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. The clothing swap will be held in the Fresh Market area, near The Outpost, 3007 Beach Blvd. South. Participants are invited to bring up to five gently used garments to exchange for vouchers that may be used to select clothing brought in by other participants. Clothing may be for women, men or children. Please provide hangers for all garments to be used in the swap. For anyone interested, vouchers may also be purchased for $3 each.
Donations of clothing above the 5-garment limit will be accepted. All additional donations should be contained in bags or boxes. All cash proceeds, donated clothing, and non-selected garments at the end of the swap will be donated to Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA). Third Saturday Art Walk

Peruse the work of over 50 artists and crafters, as well as authors, antique dealers and entertainers stretched over a half-mile up and down scenic Beach Boulevard. The Tangerine Greenway Blues Fest Returns!!
On Saturday, September 25 the 49th Street Business Association, Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and the cities of Gulfport and St. Petersburg will co-sponsor the 3rd Annual Tangerine Blues Fest on the Tangerine Greenway off 49th Street.
This FREE event will take place from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. and feature the Joel Sanders Band, the Deacon Blues Band, Julie Black, and the Damon Fowler Group!
There will be food and beverage vendors available so please don’t bring coolers.

“Ain’t Retirement Grand!” At The Back Door Theater (8:00 pm - 9:00 pm)
“Ain’t Retirement Grand!” to Run Again
The hilarious musical “Ain’t Retirement Grand” is back by popular demand and will be playing at the Back Door Theater in Gulfport September 17 through 26 prior to going on tour again throughout Florida The Back Door Theater is located at 1619 49 Street S. inGulfport. Always a sellout, “Ain’t Retirement Grand!” is a funny and delightful look at our retirement years with a cast of four singing 21 original songs. Written by playwright/ composer, Gil Perlroth, and directed by Daniel Harris, this musical has been receiving standing ovations while playing to packed theaters and retirement communities for the past 18 months. Among the many songs you will hear are: The Wedding from Hell, Early Bird Special, Catch of the Day, and We Spent it All on Ourselves (where a couple apologizes to their offspring for not leaving them an inheritance).
Tickets are still only $15 and may be purchased in advance at Eileen’s Resale Boutique (located at 5101 Gulfport Blvd. in Gulfport), or reserve them by calling 727-322- 0316. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Early reservations are advised, as the performances usually sell out quickly. The Gulfport Merchants Association is accepting donations of non-perishable food, toiletries and personal needs to be distributed to the Gulfport Senior Center Pantry. Bring your donations to the Gulfport Merchants Association tent each Tuesday during the Fresh Market, on Beach Blvd. below 29th Ave. South, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Senior Center Pantry, which offers food and other needed items to struggling Gulfport families, is in great need of donations to keep up with the needs of its clients.
